Jehovah Jireh Mustard Seed projects in South Africa and Their Impact on the Children We Serve
Background: A Ministry Born From Compassion and Calling
Scott and Michelle Johnson founded Jehovah Jireh in 2018 with a simple yet profound vision: to provide a place of safety, healing, and hope for vulnerable children in Qwa-Qwa who had suffered abandonment, abuse, neglect, or the loss of parents. Over time, this vision grew into a comprehensive, Christ-centred support system that walks with a child from early childhood all the way into independent adulthood.
Each ministry under Jehovah Jireh meets a specific need in a child’s journey—physical, educational, emotional, spiritual, and developmental. Together, they create a seamless pathway of care unlike anything available to most children in South Africa’s vulnerable communities.
1. Jehovah Jireh Mustard Seed Child & Youth Care Centre (CYCC)
A safe home for 65 vulnerable children
The CYCC is the foundation of all Jehovah Jireh ministries. It provides full-time residential care for children placed by the courts in terms of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005. Here, children receive:
Shelter, food, clothing, and nurturing care
Protection from abuse and neglect
Daily routines that promote stability
Emotional and spiritual support
Access to schooling and healthcare
For many children, this is the first place where they feel safe, loved, and valued. The CYCC becomes their home—and the staff their family.
2. Donna Moses Christian Preschool
Early childhood development for ages 3–6
Located on the Jehovah Jireh Christian campus, this preschool prepares children emotionally, academically, and spiritually for formal schooling. It offers:
A Christian-based early learning curriculum
Play-based development
Early literacy and numeracy
Trauma-sensitive care
Social and emotional growth
This preschool creates the foundation for future learning. Many children arrive with developmental delays caused by trauma or instability; Donna Moses Christian Preschool helps them catch up and thrive.
3. Jehovah Jireh Private Christian School (Opening January 2027)
A Christ-centred primary school built for the children of Jehovah Jireh
Beginning with Grade 1 in 2027, the school will grow year by year as the children advance. The school ensures:
Continuity of education within a safe and familiar environment
A biblical worldview woven into every subject
Small classes and personalised academic support
Daily discipleship and mentoring
Trauma-informed teaching
Stability for children who previously faced instability
This ensures that children who grow up at Jehovah Jireh never have to be uprooted or placed in environments where they feel unsafe or misunderstood.
4. Skills Development & Sustainability Projects
Building confidence, capability, and long-term stability
To empower young people and strengthen the ministry's sustainability, Jehovah Jireh operates several hands-on training programmes:
Agricultural Projects
Vegetable gardens
Poultry farming
These projects supplement food costs, teach responsibility, and equip children and youth with practical agricultural skills.
Skills Workshops
Carpentry
Tailoring and sewing
Maintenance and practical trades
These workshops prepare children and school-leavers for real-world employment or entrepreneurship while supporting the ministry’s long-term economic resilience.
5. Jehovah Jireh Independent Living Programme
Supporting youth 18+ as they transition to adulthood
According to the Children’s Act, once a child in a CYCC turns 18 and completes Grade 12, they must exit the system. For most youths, this is a sudden and devastating transition—without family, financial support, or a home.
The Jehovah Jireh Independent Living Programme bridges this gap by providing:
Accommodation
Meals and clothing
Transport and study support
Counselling and mentorship
Life-skills and financial literacy training
Assistance with job seeking and further education
This programme ensures that no young adult from Jehovah Jireh is left vulnerable or alone after leaving care. They are supported until they can stand confidently on their own.
